Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad YunusAddress at the funeral of Sharif Osman Hadi on Saturday at Sangsad Bhaban said the nation will forever remember Sharif Osman Hadi and work to fulfill his dream.He noted that millions of people had flocked to the venue, but millions of people across Bangladesh and Bangladeshis living abroad were waiting to hear from Hadi. “We have come to make you a promise – that we will fulfill what you have told us,” Yunus said, according to the Daily Star. “You gave us such a mantra that this nation will never forget. It will echo in our ears forever.”The Chief Adviser pointed out that the message would accompany every Bangladeshi throughout life, instilling a sense of dignity and resilience, with the reminder that “our head will never bow.”Highlighting Hadi’s lasting legacy, he said Hadi will live on in the nation’s memory and continue to inspire people through his ideals in the coming generations.“Today we give you a promise on behalf of all of us that we will move forward in line with your mantra,” Yunus said at the conclusion of his address. Hadi, a well-known youth leader, was shot in the head by masked gunmen on December 12 while participating in an election campaign in central Dhaka’s Bijoynagar district. He was later taken abroad for further medical treatment but succumbed to his injuries in Singapore on Thursday.Earlier on Friday, Bangladesh held Hadi’s funeral in Dhaka, which was attended by a large crowd amid heightened security.Officials said the investigation into the murder and security breach was ongoing and law enforcement was on high alert to prevent further violence. The killing sparked widespread protests in Dhaka, where thousands took to the streets demanding justice late Thursday and early Friday. The unrest soon spread beyond the capital, with protesters attempting to march on Indian diplomatic sites and destroy properties linked to the former ruling Awami League.During the violence, offices of prominent media houses, including The Daily Star and Prothom Alo, were attacked, while protesters also vented their anger at the partially destroyed home of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.In a late-night Facebook post on Thursday, Inquilab Monchi said: “Through destruction and fire, certain groups aim to make Bangladesh an ineffective state. They are trying to undermine the independence and sovereignty of our country.” You have to understand that 32 and 36 are not the same.”The government on Friday stressed the importance of the upcoming elections and referendum, describing them as “not just political exercises but a solemn national commitment.” It added: “This promise is inextricably linked to the dream for which Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi gave his life. Honoring his sacrifice requires restraint, responsibility and a firm commitment to reject hate.”
