NEW DELHI: First of all, the government has notified standards for incense sticks (agarbatti) and laid down quality norms or Indian standards specifying a list of substances banned from being used in their manufacture.Items include certain insecticidal chemicals such as allethrin, permethrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin and fipronil, as well as synthetic fragrance intermediates such as benzyl cyanide, ethyl acrylate and diphenylamine. Many of these substances are internationally restricted or banned due to their potential impacts on human health, indoor air quality and ecological safety. The IS 19412:2025 standard developed by BIS was released by Consumer Minister Pralhad Joshi on Consumer Rights Day. The department said this aims to improve quality, safety and sustainability. This is currently a voluntary standard. It divides agarbattis into machine-made, handmade and traditional masala agarbattis and prescribes requirements for raw materials, firing quality, fragrance performance and chemical parameters.“Substances used in the past … have been linked to respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, neurological effects and environmental damage when repeatedly inhaled indoors,” the department said.
