The April-December 2025-26 period saw massive growth in GST revenue with the total revenue reaching Rs 16.5 million, an increase of 8.6 per cent over Rs 15.2 million in the same period last year. Both the central and
state components recorded positive growth during this period.
The financial year 2024-25 also proved to be a milestone for GST with revenue touching a record Rs 22.08 lakh crore, up 9.4 per cent year-on-year. The average monthly collection reached Rs 184 crore, the highest since the implementation of GST in 2017.
This growth is due to the system switching from four tax rates to two main tax rates of 5 percent and 18 percent, with a special rate of 40 percent for luxury goods.
The recent reforms, announced by Prime Minister Modi on Independence Day from the Red Fort and implemented from the first day of Navratri, represent the most
significant overhaul of the system. These changes aim to reduce the tax burden on citizens while promoting economic growth through a simpler tax structure.
Meanwhile, the
Council has held 55 meetings since its inception in 2016 and taken several important decisions aimed at simplifying the GST framework and making it more business-friendly.
