Nurse cuts off infant's thumb at hospital in Indore

INDORE: A nurse at MY Hospital in Indore allegedly cut the thumb of a one-and-a-half-month-old boy with scissors while removing an IV cannula earlier this week. Nursing officer Aarti Kshotriya was suspended after the negligence was uncovered, while the monthly salary of a senior nursing officer and two deputy senior nurses was withheld as punishment, Dr. Arvind Ghanghoria, Dean, MG Medical College. “The head of my hospital has been asked to investigate the matter and submit a report,” he added.

The infant was admitted to the chest ward with pneumonia and survived ventilation. He was due to be released in a few days when the reckless act occurred on January 7th. The baby was taken to Super Specialty Hospital where surgeons reattached his thumb. “He is recovering well,” said Dr. Ghanghoria. An investigative committee consisting of the hospital director Dr. Ashok Yadav, the pediatrician Dr. Nirbhay Mehta, the deputy director Dr. Rohit Baderia and nurse Dayavati Dayal recorded the statement of the accused nurse on Thursday. Madhya Pradesh DyCM Rajendra Shukla, in-charge of the health department, took note of the negligence and initiated a thorough investigation into the role of the affected medical and support staff. He also directed officials to ensure strict disciplinary action against officers and staff found guilty.
