At least two people were killed and eight others seriously injured in a shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island on Saturday, police said, as officers rushed to campus looking for the suspect. Authorities initially reported that a suspect was in custody, but later corrected themselves and said there had been no arrests.“I can confirm that two people have died this afternoon and another eight are in critical status,” Providence, Rhode Island, Mayor Brett Smiley said at a news conference.The university remained on lockdown late afternoon after an alert warned students and staff of an active shooter near the Barus and Holley engineering building. A Providence police spokesman previously confirmed that several people had been shot, The New York Times reported.Around 4:15 p.m., Brown University sent out an alert asking everyone on campus to lock doors, silence phones and remain hidden until further notice. A later message just before 5 p.m. said a suspect was in custody, but the university quickly corrected this and said there had been no arrests. The first warning also warned: “Take measures to protect yourself as a last resort.” Authorities continued to urge people to shelter in place.US President Donald Trump responded to the shooting on Truth Social, saying: “I have been informed of the shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island. The FBI is on scene. The suspect is in custody. God bless the victims and the families of the victims!”He later clarified: “Brown University Police have reversed their previous statement – the suspect is NOT in custody.”
