INDORE: The Madhya Pradesh government late Tuesday admitted 15 deaths due to the diarrhea outbreak in Indore. The number of deaths was determined in a study by the state government.Indore district commissioner Sudam Khade told TOI, “As many as 15 deaths were due to diarrhea and related symptoms caused by contaminated water.”“We are still waiting for further contributions,” he added. The analysis, carried out by doctors at the city’s Mahatma Gandhi Medical College (MGM) in Indore, sought to find out how many people have died from consuming contaminated drinking water. As of Monday, the government had confirmed only six deaths due to diarrhea and vomiting, although it put the total number of deaths in the region at 10. Despite the statements, the government had paid compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of 18 people, insisting that it was on a humanitarian basis and taking into account the “gravity” of the situation.Officials said a team of five doctors examined the medical records of 21 people who died in the area after reports of contaminated water in the area surfaced last month. Bhagirathpura has seen a surge in patient admissions to hospitals since December 29, 2025, leading to a humanitarian and political controversy in Madhya Pradesh.
