NEW DELHI: congress Chairman Rahul Gandhi on Friday demanded a transparent probe into the death of singer Zubeen Garg as he paid tributes at the site of his last rites in Sonapur, on the outskirts of Guwahati.“It is the government’s duty to quickly investigate what happened, transparently investigate what happened and tell the family exactly what happened in Singapore,” Gandhi said while speaking to reporters.
“Zubeen Garg’s family, the people of Assam have the right to know what happened to him (Zubeen),” he added. “The sooner the truth comes out the better because Zubeen Garg’s family needs closure.”Earlier, Gandhi had offered a ‘gamosa’, the traditional Assamese shawl, and a wreath on the cremation platform to pay tribute to the singer.He was accompanied by Assam Pradesh Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, AICC general secretary and Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia and other senior party leaders of the state.As Gandhi paid his tribute, the crowd at the site chanted slogans such as “Justice for Zubeen” and “Joy Zubeen”.Gandhi and the other Congress leaders sat on the floor and took part in the ‘naam kirtan’ (prayers) held at the spot.The Congress leader also planted a ‘Nahor’ (Indian rose chestnut) sapling at the cremation ground, which the singer liked.Garg, 52, died on September 19 while swimming in Singapore. He was cremated with state honors on September 23 at Sonapur near Guwahati.The Assam government has set up an SIT to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
